This blog collects some of my thoughts and essays. Some have appeared in newspapers or online magazines; others were born and grew up here.
I was born in Turin and have lived outside Italy since 2002: first Austria, then the USA, now the UK. I trained as a medical biotechnologist and spent my early years working on tumours and viral vectors. In 2006 I received a PhD in developmental neurobiology from the University of Vienna, and then moved to Madison, Wisconsin, for another four years.
Since 2010 I have been at Imperial College London, where I am an Associate Professor and lead a systems neurobiology group that brings together genetics and bioinformatics. My main scientific interest has long been the function of sleep: what is sleep actually for? More recently, I have turned my attention to consciousness, both in insects and in digital minds.
This blog contains personal opinions only, unrelated to my work. Science connected to my research lives on the lab website.
